So far I have a totally stock DR650 and a 276C still in a box and I think I'm ready (mentally that is) to try my first ride but I'd need to learn something, wait, make that anything, about gps-ing.

I tried the manual but even that seems a little bit more than I can digest. Oh yeah, I could try the manual again, try to figure out how to load maps, etc but I was hoping for some hands-on tutoring before the PB300.
Is there anything in the works for a little gps instruction or anyone that's using one in SJ (Bellplaine area) that's got the time?

Iam planning on riding in this event for the first time, have riden in several others though. Do we need GPS units or are we given maps also ??

There are no maps provided a GPS is a requirement of the ride. Last year riders without a GPS buddied up with riders that did.
From what I read in the post that Jack made in the ADV forums that will not be allowed this year and everyone must have a GPS and do their own navigation.
Jack will need to make the final determination on this but that is what I understood from the post.

EDIT... Sorry I misread the post on ADV here it is:

It will be a GPS guided journey thru the dirt roads of the NJ pineland reserve, with support vehicles and sweep riders, but you must navigate by GPS or ride in a group with a GPS, no group leaders will be provided.

I typically do most of my riding during the week... if you are available I could give you a basic rundown on use of the GPS. I am by no means an expert but I can show you how to load the maps, etc.
I assume you have Mapsource TOPO US (the recommended program for off road mapping)

Thanks Lake Effect. I think I have what I need for the discs. I'll be out of town until Sept 6th. Maybe we can hook up and do that sometime after I get back. Really appreciate that.

No problem... maybe by then some of the gates in the WMAs will be open and we can hit some of the side trails.
Just post up a message when you are ready and we'll get together and I can show you how to load the maps you want and we can go out and navigate some waypoints so you get a feel for it. I have some good tracks and waypoints for the area.

GPS school Friday night Oct 10 8PM at the Ramada Inn.

We'll go over the basic's. The 276C or 60CSX is what we use, so you'll at least understand what it does for the ride.

Hey Sticks...

I was down in your area today riding. We went right through Bellplain on our way to Tuckahoe.
